Very few guidebooks are actually useful. Most provide lists of things to do that can only be loosely connected to anticipated results. Connecting to Change the World stands out because of the authors’ ability to deliver precision. The book offers precise understanding of what networks are, when they are providing value, the challenges of starting and sustaining networks, and why they are so necessary to address the complex challenges we face in communities. Though deep in theory, the authors’ theories never get far without examples from reality. Further, I’ve never read nonfiction with as much personality and narrative style that at moments is literally breathtaking. The result may be a new genre—a guidebook with the necessary empiricism and humanity required for changing the world in the 21 st century.
